In the Spotlight...
Gail Langenus has been volunteering with Foodshare for more than 4 years! She initially heard about our flexible opportunities through an article published in the Hartford Courant. Having spent some time helping out with Jack Bannon’s Turkey Trot, collecting turkeys during the Thanksgiving season, she had decided it was a good fit with her busy schedule.
When Gail first began, she was asked to help out with invoice filing. While she is a retired CPA, she claims, “…my most outstanding quality at the time was my height as the new file cabinets were too tall for the previous volunteer!” Her beautiful penmanship also landed her a gig addressing envelopes. While she laughs about her "skill set", she understands how important the work is, and is always happy to do what is needed.
“I get more out of volunteering for Foodshare than Foodshare gets from me. Although I don't see the food going out, I do see the money coming in and know that in a small way I contributed to the effort. I love working with the employees and other volunteers. They must take lessons in making a volunteer feel like they are valued because I feel that way every time I come in to work.”
Over the years Gail has broadened her skill set, helping out with ornaments at holiday time, walk-a-thon reporting, cash receipts around Thanksgiving, and much more! She recently moved to Bloomfield after residing in Simsbury for 35 years, but appreciates the easy commute to Foodshare. As a wife and mother of three boys, she has certainly had her hands full over the years, but always manages to make time to give back to her community. Thanks Gail!
Thanks to some of our most recent volunteers to hit 100 service hours:
