Expect More Healthy Kids

2017 summer meals header

This summer — in partnership with Fox61, Country 92.5, and The River 105.9, and with generous financial support from Stop & Shop and Panera — Foodshare is offering sporting events at summer meal sites in Bristol, New Britain, East Hartford and two locations in Hartford. Each week kids will have the chance to compete in skills drills in a variety of activities, including: basketball, baseball, track/field and nutrition education. Those who place first or second will be invited to compete in our Championship event at the close of summer for a chance to win some great prizes!

A healthy FREE lunch is provided for all participants 18 years & under by the USDA Summer Food Service Program. Site locations and event times are being confirmed and will be available shortly. High School athletes in each town are being invited to help facilitate these events and will receive community service credit if they wish. Interested athletes should contact Maddie Appletonat Foodshare for more information.

2013 Summer Meals

  • 1 in 6 kids living in Greater Hartford struggles to get the food they need to stay strong and healthy. In the summer that need hits an all-time high while kids are out of school.
  • Connecticut has one of the highest participation rates in the nation for summer meals—23 percent—and yet 3 out of 4 eligible kids are not taking advantage of the program.
  • Summer Meals is a federally funded program through the USDA, increasing access to healthy food and bringing millions of dollars into the state.
  • Open Summer meals sites are completely free for kids 18 & under, and require no paperwork or pre-registration. Children with disabilities are eligible through age 21.

Meals are served Monday-Friday. Some sites offer breakfast and lunch, others just lunch. To find a site near you dial 2-1-1, or visit CTSummerMeals.org. You can also text CTMEALS to 877877.

Not all towns offer a summer food program, but Foodshare is busy building partnerships throughout the region to help change that. Many Greater Hartford sites – including those in Enfield and New Britain – were established with help from a Foodshare Hunger Action Team.  Contact us to learn how you can help your hungry neighbors get access to a Summer Food Service Program next year!
