SNAP Outreach

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, is one of the most powerful tools for addressing hunger in our community. This federal nutrition program, administered by the state, helps eligible low-income people stretch their food budgets and buy the groceries they need.

Some people who are eligible for SNAP do not apply because the process can be challenging. Foodshare addresses this issue by training volunteers who meet with people one-on-one to help them fill out and submit their application forms. Our volunteer-supported SNAP Outreach program is offered at community sites throughout Hartford and Tolland counties, including food pantries, town social service offices, and other human service organizations.

By making the process local and easy, more people in our community are getting the food they need. Last year, Foodshare helped 470 households apply for SNAP benefits providing hundreds of thousands of meals to local families.
